Let it Ride (An Archery Poem)

Let it Ride
this week,
like most weeks,
has had its ups and downs
though, I am thankful
that it’s mostly been on the up
rounding it out, so far as weekdays go,
is today—
Friday
while getting into my flow state for a bit
I descend into our basement
to shoot a quick round of six arrows
from my trusty recurve bow
they call this style of shooting
traditional archery
these days
days when most enthusiasts
let their arrows fly
from highly modernized wonders
of design, manufacturing, and technology
bows which feature:
multiple sight pins, oriented for specific yardages,
highly-tuned compound pulley systems,
significant let-off when fully drawn,
plus other advantageous
bells and whistles
cutting-edge bows that feel more akin, in many ways,
to shooting a modern rifle
than they are
the ancient bows
of our warrior/hunter ancestors
BUT, when using an old-timey style stick and string
with no sights, let alone bells or whistles,
you’ve got to earn your confidence
by your hits
via a good bit of practice and
the development
of your archer’s intuition
and your humility?
well— that is earned by your misses
“Aim small,
miss small,”
I recite in my mind
as slowly draw back number one for Friday morning,
feel my aim, and
let ‘er fly
dead bullseye, baby…
though I don’t often do this,
I’m gonna cash in my bowman’s chips for the day
after only one shot
since I found my center
on the first try
mark it down in the “ups” category for this week
I’ll just let these other five arrows
have an early weekend
as for the first projectile
sharply piercing the nucleus
of my well-worn target block
I’ll just
let it ride
in singular satisfaction

“The Wanting Pier Prose of a Travelling Scofflaw” -A Pictorial Poem
This is another “poetry happens” type of thing from my recent trip to Michigan. If you look around the steel columns on this pier in Holland, Michigan, you’ll find lots of names and miniature works of art done in permanent marker or scratched into the paint. I decided to add my own “mark” as it were…

The real poetry
Lies just beyond
In the tempestuous
Blue
In the deep
In the white-foam breakers
In the distant
Canvas sails
Pulled taut (Forgive the use of “taught” in the pic. It’s hard to proofread marker on-site 🙂

“Love is the Middle: The True Story of a Father and Son” is nearly finished!
As of today, I am half way through my final edit of, “Love is the Middle: The True Story of a Father and Son.” It was January 2014 when I wrote the first words of the book. Now, other than some final tweaks, it is nearly finished. When I started writing, I did not know how long it would take me to write the book or how long the book would be. My main priority was that I didn’t want to rush it. I waited nearly five years after my dad died to start writing the memoir of our relationship. It took years for the reality of his death to sink in and for me to grieve that loss as fully as possible. Through the writing of this book, I have grieved his death even more— and in ways that I did not anticipate.
Now that the book is almost ready to publish, I have a different priority. Perhaps it is more of a hope. I truly desire that this book grows legs and does some “walking around.” Once my work shifts from writing editing to publishing and publicity, I’ll do my damndest to make that happen. My father and I went from being miles apart in our relationship with a burnt bridge between us, to genuinely saying “I love you” again. The story of how we did that is a hell of a tale. I hope you look forward to reading it.
